Sixteen women, ages 40 to 65 (mean age 53.7), with photodamage and mild to moderate facial atrophy attended two live training sessions on muscle-resistant facial exercises. For the next 20 weeks they performed the exercises at home: 30 minutes daily for 8 weeks; and every other day for 30 minutes in weeks 9 through 20. Blinded physician evaluators viewed standard photographs and rated the end results using the Merz-Carruthers Facial Aging Photoscales (MCFAP). Subjects also rated their satisfaction with the exercises at the end of the study period.

Dermatologist Yoram Harth, MD, and his son, Oded Harth, a software engineer, have launched MDacne, a mobile acne analysis app that ties into a customized acne treatment product line. Users who download the app can take a picture of themselves on their mobile devices. The platform then uses proprietary computer vision technology to assess the user’s skin and recommends a customized kit of anti-acne topicals. MDacne subscribers can chat with a dermatologist through the app, track their skin's improvement, and read free tips on how to reduce breakouts.

Researchers Sandeep S. Saluja, MD, of the department of dermatology, University of Utah School of Medicine, et al, performed a randomized, split-face trial with 10 subjects to evaluate the safety of nonablative fractional laser (NAFL) treatment for acne scars within one month of oral isotretinoin therapy. Each patient received three treatments with an erbium-doped 1550nm NAFL on one side of the face beginning within one month after isotretinoin therapy. Treatments were spaced four weeks apart. Blinded physician evaluators rated wound healing, adverse effects and acne scar improvement.

A survey sent to 3,314 plastic surgeons (865 responded) in the United States, Canada and Norway revealed that 78.3 percent of the surgeons had symptoms of musculoskeletal injury, most commonly in the neck, shoulders and lower back; 6.7 percent required surgical intervention. The most common causes of pain cited included long surgery duration, tissue retraction and prolonged neck flexion. The most common solutions cited were core-strengthening exercises, stretching exercises and frequent adjustment of table height during surgery.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted a New Drug Application (NDA) from Allergan to review Seysara (sarecycline) for the treatment of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients nine years of age and older. Seysara is a once daily, oral, narrow spectrum tetracycline-derived antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties.

In an effort to better understand the molecular changes that lead to visible skin aging, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard School of Medicine conducted histologic and transcriptomics profiling of skin biopsies from 158 Caucasian women ages 20 to 74 years. Alexa B. Kimball, MD, et al, compared skin biopsy samples of photoexposed (face and dorsal forearm) or photoprotected (buttocks) body sites and used 23andMe genotyping determined genetic ancestry of the subjects. They noted that some of the women appeared substantially younger than their chronological age.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Coolsculpting cryolipolysis treatment (Allergan) for improved appearance of lax tissue in conjunction with submental fat, or double chin, treatments. An 18-week clinical study of Coolsculpting using the CoolMini applicator for the treatment of submental fat found that 77 percent of patients showed improved appearance of lax tissue and 75 percent of patients reported their chins looked more toned following treatment.
