Benjamin Stong, MD, of Kalos Facial Plastic Surgery in Atlanta has been appointed to the Cosmetic and Reconstructive Support Medical Advisory Council of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV). The program works in collaboration with the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) and benefits domestic abuse survivors who would otherwise be unable to afford such reconstructive care.

A survey of 618 men conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) revealed that 31% of respondents are “extremely likely” to consider a cosmetic procedure—either surgical or nonsurgical. Within this group, 58% were between the ages of 25 to 34 years; 34 percent were 18 to 24 years old.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is warning healthcare practitioners and consumers not to purchase Juvederm Ultra 2, 3 or 4 online as the products are not approved for use in the U.S. The FDA updated its web page on “Dermal Fillers Approved by the Center for Devices and Radiological Health” last week with the warning, noting it has become aware that unapproved versions of Juvederm are being sold and distributed in the U.S. by online retailers.

Allergan has announced its plans to acquire Keller Medical, a privately held medical device company that developed the Keller Funnel in 2009. The cone-shaped, lubricated plastic funnel assists plastic surgeons in breast augmentation and reconstruction procedures by guiding silicone gel implants into the surgical pocket. It allows surgeons to use a “no-touch” technique, which may help minimize the introduction of bacteria and foreign material into the surgical pocket.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is reporting that after two years of collecting data on gender confirmation surgeries, the procedures have already increased by 20% with more than 3,200 transfeminine and transmasculine surgeries performed in 2016. The procedures can include anything from facial and body contouring to gender reassignment surgeries. The ASPS posits that increased access to gender confirmation procedures helped fuel the increase from 2015 to 2016.

For the first time, private practice owners represent the minority of physicians practicing in the U.S., according to data collected for the American Medical Association’s 2016 Physician Practice Benchmark Survey. The nationally representative survey of 3,500 U.S.-based physicians who provide at least 20 hours of patient care per week and are not employed by the federal government revealed that 47.1% of physicians are practice owners, 47.1% are employed and 5.9% are working as independent contractors.
