The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted Allergan’s Botox Cosmetic approval for its third indication, the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines associated with frontalis muscle activity in adults. This approval makes the brand the first neurotoxin indicated for three facial treatment areas: forehead lines, crow’s feet lines and glabellar lines.

Solta Medical’s newest radiofrequency-based device, the Thermage FLX System, has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to noninvasively smooth skin on the face, eyes and body. The system uses patented radiofrequency technology to create a uniform heating effect in the deep collagen-rich layers of the skin. This gentle heating tightens existing collagen and stimulates the production of new collagen with little-to-no downtime for the patient.

Practices that are importing injectable skin lighteners or developing their own compounded injectable products for sale to patients should be aware that a federal judge has entered a consent decree of permanent injunction on behalf of the United States Food and Drug Administration against Flawless Beauty, a New Jersey company. The injunction orders the company to stop selling injectable skin whitening products as well as beauty products containing human placenta and recall some of its products because they are unapproved new drugs that may be unsafe, putting consumers at risk.

The number of surgical hair restoration procedures performed worldwide increased by 60% from 2014 to 2016 with 635,189 procedures performed last year, according to the results of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) Practice Census Survey. Of the 635,189 procedures performed, Asia led the way with 195,284 procedures, followed by the Middle East with 149,400 and the U.S. with 133,136 procedures. The number of nonsurgical hair restoration patients also increased considerably with 1,241,764 nonsurgical patients treated in 2016 (a 78% increase from 2014).

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal filler from Ontario, Canada-based Prollenium Medical Technologies. The soft tissue filler is sold under the brand Revanesse in Canada. At the time of print, Prollenium had not announced a brand name or date of commercial availability in the U.S.

A split-lip study, published in Aesthetic Surgery (October 2017) has revealed that vibration can reduce the pain of filler injections during lip augmentation. Authors Kirdar Guney, MD, Billur Sezgin, MD, and Reha Yavuzer, MD, used vibration stimulus on 25 patients undergoing lip augmentation with a hyaluronic acid filler. Patients were asked to score the pain during treatment on a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being no pain and 10 the worst pain they had ever felt) for each half of their lips.
